Eco Swaps That Save Money, Reduce Waste, and Actually Last

If you’re trying to live more sustainably, the answer isn’t always buying more “eco-friendly swaps” and throwing out everything you already own. Often, the most sustainable choice is the thing you already have.

But when you do need to replace something or want to switch to a plastic free alternative, I always say: buy something designed to last — and something you’ll genuinely love using for years to come.

I truly believe sustainable living makes you appreciate what you own more. Every time you use a reusable product instead of a disposable one, you’re reminded that you made a choice with both yourself and the planet in mind.

That being said, here are 5 sustainable products genuinely worth buying once.

1/ Reusable Safety Razor

Disposable razors are expensive, wasteful, and designed to be replaced constantly. Even popular razors with replaceable heads still create unnecessary waste and cost far more over time than reusable alternatives.

A stainless steel safety razor can last for decades, comes in beautiful colours you’ll actually want to display in your bathroom, and replacement blades cost a fraction of the price.

Pair it with a plastic-free shaving soap and you’re set for an incredibly smooth shave.

Why it’s worth buying:

  • No plastic waste
  • Saves money on replacement blades
  • Better quality shave

2. Refillable Skincare & Haircare

White Rabbit Skincare Coconut & Rosehip Calming Face Moisturiser - 1L BULK - Home Compostable Refill - 100ml

Beauty packaging creates enormous amounts of waste, especially when products are designed for single use.

When you think about it, part of what you’re paying for every time you buy skincare is the packaging itself — only to throw it away again and again.

That’s exactly why I created our refillable skincare and haircare range in home-compostable refill pouches and partnered with amazing brands like UpCircle, Moo & Yoo, White Rabbit Skincare, and Evolve Beauty to bring refillable skincare and haircare to Plastic Freedom.

Once you’ve found a product you love, you simply refill and save money and packaging waste every single time.

Why it’s worth buying:

  • Reuse your original containers
  • Saves money over time
  • Completely home compostable packaging means less packaging waste

3. Stainless Steel Water Bottles

YETI RAMBLER® JR Kid's Bottle - 12oz / 354ml - Plastic Freedom

One of the easiest eco swaps you can make is replacing single-use plastic bottles with a reusable stainless steel water bottle.

A high-quality insulated bottle can last for years, keeps drinks cold all day, and dramatically cuts down on plastic waste.

I whole heatedly recommend Yeti water bottles and flasks as they literally last for years and don't start to lose functionality like other reusable items out there, no matter what adventure you take them on.

Once you've gone Yeti, you'll never go back!

Why it’s worth buying:

  • Reduces single-use plastic
  • Saves money on bottled drinks
  • Durable enough for everyday use

4. Packable & Reusable Shopping Bags

We all know that feeling of getting to the shop and you've left your reusable shopping bags at home so you have to buy one off the shelf 'just this time'.

If you're like me you'll have loads of huge shopping bags which are impracticable to always have with you. This is why I highly recommend Baggu recycled shopping bags that pack down into their own pockets because not only will this probably just become your every day bag, but you can literally travel with it everywhere across the world and never leave it at home again!

The recycled BAGGU collection is designed for everyday life — practical, durable, and far more stylish than disposable plastic bags.

Why it’s worth buying:

  • Prevents hundreds of plastic bags from ending up in landfill
  • Strong enough for weekly shops
  • Compact and reusable

5. Refillable Cleaning Products

Remember earlier when I said the most sustainable option is often the thing you already own?

Well, I guarantee you already have an empty cleaning spray bottle sitting in your cupboard right now.

By simply reusing that bottle and switching to cleaning refill concentrates, you can prevent huge amounts of plastic waste over the years.

Brands like Neat, OceanSaver, Spruce, and MACK make it easy to refill your existing bottles or invest in beautiful reusable ones designed to last.

Refillable cleaning products are honestly one of the simplest ways to reduce waste without changing your daily routine.

Why it’s worth buying:

  • Cuts down on single-use plastic
  • Saves storage space
  • More cost-effective long term

Sustainable Living Starts With Better Choices, Not Perfection

Low waste living doesn’t mean throwing everything away and starting over. In fact, the most sustainable approach is often using what you already have until it genuinely needs replacing.

When you do need something new, choosing products designed to last longer, create less waste, and support more conscious consumption can make a meaningful difference over time.

My goal has always been to make eco-friendly living feel approachable, practical, and genuinely enjoyable and with 10 years living as plastic free and eco as possible, I'm confident everyone can enjoy the journey to Plastic Freedom too!
